Oan Yer Bike

The open source project was born at Code the City's 26th Hackathon (CTC26) which took place from 21-22 May 2022.

Further information on the hackathon can be found here.

Project

From research there appears to be no central cycling resource. At the hack weekend we commenced work on a prototype resource focussing on information which could be plotted on a map.

Map

The Map page contains information on where to find:

The source of the data is OpenStreetMap mined by Overpass turbo

Links

The Links page contains links to some resources considered in the making of this project.

The resources have been made available in case they are of help to you.

No responsibility is taken for the contents of these websites. The research was done during the hackathon weekend for the purpose of creating this prototype and currently are not planned to be updated hence the events and links will become dated.

Background

Challenge:

While Aberdeen’s bike friendly infrastructure is mostly improving, there is no central place for information. As such, it might be useful to create a map based directory of useful things, places and routes. This would include:

Leveraging existing Open Source web systems, the website part of this could be developed in parallel to the collation of information, and completion of a reasonable working system within a weekend is fairly feasible.

Project research:

There is an exhastive map of cycling paths in Aberdeen, however this is in PDF format and the underlying data is not published to the public in any manchine-readable format

Bike repair stands existed across the city, but the location of some appeared to be missing from maps of the area. We commenced tracking the location of these items and uploading their details to WikiMedia Commons and Wikidata.

Our research indicated that there some good cycling sources but nothing that pulled together everything onto one map or central repository.
